Calvin University and Calvin Theological Seminary
January 31 - February 4, 2022

Join this livestream conference, with several in-person sessions, sponsored by the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship and the Center for Excellence in Preaching, located at Calvin University and Calvin Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Updated on 1/04/2022: We remain ready to adapt to public health guidelines that may emerge due to COVID-19. See notes on in-person sessions.

Worship Services

Worship services will be based on The Beatitudes, featuring both YouTube Premiere and in-person/livestream services, with preachers and worshiping communities from across North America and beyond. Additionally, we will join Calvin University's daily in-person/livestream chapel service (10 am EST) which includes songs, prayers, preaching, and more, led by the Calvin University Worship Apprentices, mentored by Paul Ryan, Nate Glasper and campus pastor Mary Hulst.

Learning Sessions

These times feature panels of experts and pastoral leaders on topics related to public worship and the Christian life, broadcast on YouTube Premiere and drawing wisdom from congregations and institutions across a range of traditions and denominations. Join through live chat as sessions premiere. We plan to have several sessions in-person/livestream feed from the campus of Calvin University. We hope this is an engaging option for Calvin students and community members, as space and campus guidelines allow.

Roundtable Global Conversations

“The Beatitudes in Context” are group discussions (sign up limits apply to keep groups manageable) facilitated through Zoom Meetings and conducted in four different languages (no translation).

Calvin Discovery Day

This day is organized through the Calvin Admissions Office. Friday, February 4, provides an opportunity to feature our signature program on ministry leadership—the Ministry Leadership Cohort (MLC). This day is designed for high school students who want to explore unique Calvin opportunities—including the MLC—in their journey of learning and growth.

All high school students are welcome to participate in Discovery Day. Students interested in joining the MLC in Fall 2022 need to apply to Calvin by December 15, 2021.

Notes on In-person Sessions

You are warmly invited and encouraged to attend the in-person sessions at the Symposium on Worship. The conference takes place in the fourth week of the spring semester at Calvin University. You will find an active campus of students, faculty, and staff (and their cars!) and a place that loves our neighbor and practices COVID-19 restrictions for the health and safety of all.

As of 1-04-2022, Calvin University requires indoor masking for all. We have designed the conference to be successful as a fully online conference. If our University places additional COVID restrictions in place, the in-person sessions will switch to online sessions at the same time slot.

A new academic calendar at Calvin and continued COVID reality have required changes to the conference, yet we hope and trust it will remain a vibrant time of worship, learning, and fellowship together. This coming year we are not able to offer in-person book and music exhibits; we will not need name badges nor a printed program book (all material is online); and the schedule does not include refreshment breaks nor mealtimes.

The in-person sessions (which are also livestreamed) are shaded in pink on the schedule snapshot, held in the University Chapel Sanctuary (with two exceptions), and include the following:

  • Daily morning chapel worship with the students
  • Afternoon plenary sessions with two sessions back-to-back (15 minute stretch break in between)
  • Tuesday and Thursday worship services (both at 7 pm EST) and a final service Friday at 4 pm EST.

The rest of our sessions--both worship services and learning panels--will premiere on YouTube. On-campus participants may choose to engage these sessions through your own computer or device. We will also designate space in the University Chapel undercroft (basement) for watch parties hosted by our staff.
