Psalmody in Color: Celebrating the Sacred Music of Black Voices
Anchored by an evening concert of psalm-based works, the Psalmody in Color festival includes a day of educational programming that engages scholars, musicians, clergy, and community members in dialogue about the role of psalmody in Black musical expression. Participants will encounter the psalms as a living and evolving art form rooted in scripture, shaped by history, and brought to life through the artistry of Black composers.

In December 2012, Robert Nordling gave an extended interview. In this edited excerpt, he talks about humility as a key to Christian leadership and formation during college.
Robert Nordling is a conductor, composer, arranger, and educator who says, “Music has been a central part of my life since age three.” He has held music ministry positions in churches in California, Washington, and England. Nordling also serves as resource development specialist for orchestral music for Calvin Institute of Christian Worship.
From 2002 through 2007, Nordling and his wife, Cherith Fee Nordling, worked as co-directors of Christian formation at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He also served as Calvin’s orchestra conductor from 2002 through 2012. Nordling left Calvin to join his wife in metro Chicago, where she teaches theology at Northern Seminary in Lombard, Illinois.

Nordling says that Christians have for centuries debated whether music is inherently powerful or whether powerful response to music comes from learned experience in a particular context. In this edited excerpt, he explains why humility and authenticity have always been necessary to resolve church music and worship disagreements.
The psalms are a rich resource for our human experience of emotions, community, and connection to God. We will practice activities based on the truth of the psalms and on psychology to strengthen our capacity for navigating suffering with grace and resilience.

A panel discussion in which Amanda Benckhuysen, Karen Campbell, G. Sujin Pak, and moderator Kathy Smith ponder the challenges and opportunities in preaching and teaching from the psalms. Are there incomplete or incorrect assumptions about the psalms that sermons and lectures can tackle? How do we handle the imprecatory psalms when we have a Savior who told us to love and forgive the very enemies many psalms talk about? The panel will consider these and other vital questions for preachers and teachers in today’s church.

The psalms reflect our deepest emotions as people of faith. In their expressions of thanksgiving, trust, lament, anger, joy, doubt, and praise, these ancient prayers seem to peer right into our souls and put words to our thoughts and experiences. But the psalms are more than human words to God. Embedded as they are in the scriptures, they are now also God’s word to us.

Anneke Kaai studied fine art and painting in the Netherlands at secular schools in the 1960s and ’70s. That experience compelled her to express her Christian faith through her art. She has painted many works based on scripture, including three series of paintings on the psalms, which she sees as a bountiful resource of imagery for the full range of human feelings in relation to God.
