Each devotion is designed to be practical, flexible, and engaging, offering scripture readings, thoughtful reflection, discussion prompts, and guided prayer. Whether your team is gathering for the first time or has been serving together for years, these practices create space to center your attention on God and one another. As the psalms teach us to bring our whole selves before God, this series encourages worship leaders to lead from a place of honesty, wonder, and shared faith—trusting that God is meeting you even as you prepare to lead others.
The organizational rubric of these devotions—orientation, disorientation, reorientation—comes from the biblical scholar Walter Brueggemann (Spirituality of the Psalms, Fortress Press, 2001), who used those categories as a broad framework for understanding the psalms. As we journey through life, there are times when we feel grounded and sure (orientation). At other times we feel lost and alone (disorientation), which often leads to a season in which we find a new “normal” and even look toward the future with great anticipation (reorientation). The psalms, as they reflect lived reality, often correspond with one or more of those seasons of life.
Because this series was initially used during the fall season leading up to Advent, we have also included one devotion specific to that season.
