Worship Team Devotions: Suffering

Suffering is something none of us can avoid. It can take many shapes: academic pressure, broken friendships, financial strain, family struggles, or even the quiet ache  of feeling alone. In Psalm 13, David puts words to what many of us feel in seasons of  suffering: “How long, Lord?” He is brutally honest about his pain, confusion, and sense of God’s silence.

What stands out, though, is that David doesn’t stop at despair. Even in his suffering, he makes a deliberate choice to remember God’s steadfast love: “But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation” (v. 5, NIV). David models something important for us: suffering is not the end of the story. Honesty before God can coexist with trust in God.

This psalm gives worship leaders permission to be real about our pain while also reminding us that suffering can deepen our dependence on God’s love and faithfulness.

Read Psalm 13 together.

Psalm 13 (NIV)

How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
How long must I wrestle with my thoughts
and day after day have sorrow in my heart?
How long will my enemy triumph over me?
Look on me and answer, Lord my God.
Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death,
and my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,”
and my foes will rejoice when I fall.
But I trust in your unfailing love;
my heart rejoices in your salvation.
I will sing the Lord’s praise,
for he has been good to me.

Discussion questions

  1. David repeats the phrase “How long?” four times. What “how longs” are you carrying in this season of life?
  2. What do you do when God feels silent in your suffering? Do you tend to withdraw, numb yourself, or lean in?
  3. David shifts from despair (vv. 1–4) to trust and worship (vv. 5–6). What helps you make that shift in your own seasons of suffering?
  4. How might your honesty about suffering and God’s faithfulness through it  encourage others around you?

Read Psalm 13 together again. Take a moment of silence to name before God the  places of suffering in your life. Then close in prayer, asking God to give you trust in his unfailing love and the ability to worship even in the midst of pain.
