Esperança. Hope. Esperanza.
Hope is a beautiful word, and it refers to a precious gift.
But it is also a difficult word, frequently used in the midst of challenging, painful, scary situations.
Maybe it is preferable to be in a position where hope is not needed, when everything is fine: we are healthy, we can pay our bills, our career goals are being met, the crops are plentiful, the weather report is just right, there are no disagreements among our family members and within our circle of friends about any issues, our laws are just, the system is fair, our team is winning the game by a comfortable margin, all our dreams are coming true.
But in reality, you and I know that everything is not fine. Any one of us could easily list a number of challenges we are facing, both as individuals and as inhabitants of planet Earth: disease, poverty, hunger, unemployment, fires, hurricanes, locusts, wars, systemic racism, greed, injustice, prejudice, malice, hatred: these are all around us.
I am an optimistic person, but I am also deeply aware that we live in a fallen world.
I am recording these words in late November, 2020; need I say more? Everything is not fine, and there is plenty of room for despair and hopelessness. If we consider our circumstances, then embracing despair may seem like the logical option.
But where will hopelessness take us?
When we embrace despair, we convince ourselves that our work is meaningless, that our voice is useless; we give up, we turn our back on the present with all that it entails, we stop believing and dreaming, we admit that we are tired of waiting, that all is lost.
But the Word of God offers us another reality: hope.
And you don’t have to take my word for it.
Consider the following scripture passages (NIV):
“You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds, God our Savior, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas” (Ps. 65:5).
“The Lord delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love” (Ps. 147:11).
“And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us” (Rom. 5:5
“That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe” (1 Tim. 4:10).
“But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet” (I Thess. 5:8).
There are dozens of biblical passages like these, encouraging us to have hope, to wait in the Lord, to trust in his love and his mercy. But what is hope, really?
Hope has been defined as “an inner sense of confidence in God, a serenity despite terrible present circumstances,” and “an attitude toward the future, an assurance that God’s promises will be kept” (Bruce M. Metzger and Michael D. Coogan, eds., The Oxford Guide to Ideas & Issues of the Bible (New York: Oxford University Press, 2001)).
Confidence, serenity, assurance—what great gifts! Consider also how broad and dynamic these definitions of hope are, “expanding towards the past and the future; simultaneously evoking and prophesying.”
Our hope is rooted in the acceptance of the salvation provided to us in the past by Jesus Christ. It flourishes through our daily communion and fellowship with the Holy Spirit, and it will be consummated in the future, when we will be in God’s presence forever.
Yes, our “hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness” (Edward Mote, “My Hope Is Built,” P.D.).
“Because of this, we wait with eager patience, persistent in our struggles toward the morning. Because of this, our hope and expectations look toward the dawn” (Federico J. Pagura, Tr. © GIA Publications, Inc., 2012.).
When we find ourselves wandering in the wilderness or captive in our own Babylon, if it feels like we are in Gethsemane, or Calvary, or in a sealed tomb, hope reminds us that there is a Promised Land, that the exile is not the end of the story, and that resurrection is real.
Hope reminds us that God is powerful and faithful and that God is love!
Then, instead of embracing hopelessness, let us heed the words of the prophet Zechariah: “Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope” (Zech. 9:12, NRSV).
What a beautiful description: “prisoners of hope”! Prisioneiros da esperança! ¡Prisioneros de esperanza!
May our words and deeds, the meditation of our hearts, and our prayers and songs celebrate this wonderful dimension of our Christian identity: through time and through space, we are prisoners of hope!

Esperança é uma bela palavra e se refere a um dom precioso.
Mas é também uma palavra difícil, frequentemente usada em meio a situações desafiadoras, dolorosas, assustadoras.
Talvez seja preferível estar em uma situação em que a esperança não seja necessária, quando tudo vai bem: estamos com saúde, nossas contas estão em dia, nossos alvos profissionais estão sendo atingidos, a colheita é abundante, a previsão do tempo é perfeita, não há nenhum tipo de desentendimento com nossos parentes e amigos, a respeito de nenhum assunto, nossas leis são justas, o sistema é justo, nosso time está ganhando e e de muito, estamos realizando todos os nossos sonhos.
Mas, na realidade, você e eu sabemos que nem tudo vai bem. Qualquer um poderia citar facilmente muitos desafios que enfrentamos, tanto individualmente como habitantes do planeta Terra: doenças, pobreza, fome, desemprego, incêndios, furacões, gafanhotos, guerras, racismo sistêmico, ganância, preconceito, maldade, ódio: estamos cercados de tudo isso.
Eu sou uma pessoa otimista mas ao mesmo tempo sou profundamente consciente de que vivemos num mundo caído.
Eu estou fazendo essa gravação no final do mês de novembro de 2020; preciso dizer mais alguma coisa? Há muita coisa que não está bem, e há muita oportunidade para desespero e desesperança. Se considerarmos nossas circunstâncias, o desespero pode parecer uma opção lógica.
Mas aonde o desespero nos levará?
Quando abraçamos o desespero nos convecemos de que nosso trabalho é vão, nossa voz é inútil, tiramos o time de campo, viramos as costas ao presente com tudo que isso implica, desistimos de crer e sonhar, admitimos que estamos cansados de esperar, e que tudo está perdido.
Mas a palavra de Deus nos oferece outra realidade: a esperança.
E não sou eu quem está dizendo.
Considere as seguintes passagens bíblicas:
“Con tremendas cosas nos responderás tú en justicia, oh Dios de nuestra salvación, esperanza de todos los términos de la tierra, y de los más remotos confines del mar.” (Salmo 65:5)
“O Senhor agrada-se dos que o temem e dos que esperam na sua misericórdia. (Salmo 147:11)
“E a esperança não traz confusão, porquanto o amor de Deus está derramado em nosso coração pelo Espírito Santo que nos foi dado.” (Romanos 5:5)
“Porque para isto trabalhamos e lutamos, pois esperamos no Deus vivo, que é o Salvador de todos os homens, principalmente dos fiéis.” (1 Timóteo 4:10)
“Pero nosotros, que somos del día, seamos sobrios, habiéndonos vestido con la coraza de fe y de amor, y con la esperanza de salvación como yelmo.” (1 Tesalonicenses 5:8)
Existem dezenas de passagens biblicas como essas, nos encorajando a ter esperança, a esperar em Deus, a confiar no seu amor e na sua misericórdia. Mas o que é realmente, a esperança?
A esperança foi definida como “um senso interior de confiança em Deus, uma serenidade que é independente de quaisquer circunstâncias por mais terríveis que sejam,” e “uma visão de futuro, uma segurança de que Deus cumprirá as suas promessas.”
Confiança, serenidade, segurança: que dons maravilhosos! Considere também o quanto essas definições de esperança são abrangentes e dinâmicas, “se expandindo em direção ao passado e ao futuro; simultaneamente evocando e profetizando.”
Nossa esperança é enraizada na aceitação da salvação que nos foi providenciada no passado por Jesus Cristo; ela floresce através da nossa comunhão e convivência diária com o Espírito Santo; e ela será consumada no futuro, quando estaremos na presença de Deus, para sempre.
Sim, nossa esperança está firmada no sangue e na graça e justiça de Jesus.
“Por eso es que hoy tenemos esperanza, por eso es que hoy luchamos con porfía, por eso es que hoy miramos con confianza el porvenir.”
Quando nos encontramos vagando por um deserto, ou cativos em nossa própria Babilônia; quando parece até que estamos no Getsêmani, ou no calvário, ou num sepúlcro selado, a esperança nos lembra que existe uma Terra Prometida, que o exílio não é o fim da história, e que a ressurreição é real.
A esperança nos lembra que Deus é poderoso e fiel; e que Deus é amor!
Então, ao invés de abraçar a desesperança, escutemos as palavras do profeta Zacarias (Zacarias 9:12): “Voltem à sua fortaleza, ó prisioneiros da esperança.”
Que bela descrição: prisioneiros da esperança! Prisoners of hope! ¡Prisioneros de esperanza!
