Those who work at the intersection of the visual arts and congregational life know from experience how rich, complex, rewarding, and often messy this area can be.

This session, however, looked at some of the sociological factors that shape how the visual arts and our churches intersect. The aim of the session was twofold: 1) greater clarity for those of us working ?on the ground? about some of the sociological factors that shape our work, and 2) a deepened appreciation for the freedom and opportunity (as opposed to the obstacles) we enjoy in working in this area.

Presented at the 2008 Calvin Symposium on Worship.
