The psalms reflect our deepest emotions as people of faith. In their expressions of thanksgiving, trust, lament, anger, joy, doubt, and praise, these ancient prayers seem to peer right into our souls and put words to our thoughts and experiences. But the psalms are more than human words to God. Embedded as they are in the scriptures, they are now also God’s word to us.
Taken as a collection, the psalms do more than reflect our emotions. They disciple and form us as people of God, inviting us into a world and way of living that reflects the values and heart of God. Deconstructing the myths we absorb from the world around us about what matters and how we should live, the book of Psalms draws us into a world characterized by truth, justice, abundance, trust, love, and hope. In this interactive workshop, we will explore how the psalms both challenge the dominant values of our culture and invite us to live out the audacious claim that our world belongs to God.

“Deconstruction” is a popular term among young people who grew up in the Christian church. In this public lecture, Robert Chao Romero will consider the challenge of widespread deconstruction while offering a hopeful path forward. Expanding on Phyllis Tickle’s analogy of the church having a rummage sale of ideas every few centuries, Romero invites us to consider the contributions of Latina/o theology and the history of the Brown Church as valuable resources for reconstruction on the other side of deconstruction.
Carmen Imes has spent the past fifteen years immersed in the book of Exodus, writing about it for both her master’s thesis and her doctoral dissertation. In this lecture, Imes will share some of the most paradigm-shifting insights she’s had while reading Exodus through an Egyptian lens.
