Weekly worship prepares congregations for the work of the week ahead in many different jobs and places. We all carry different burdens throughout the week and are given different tasks. This series of prayers written by Calvin University faculty and staff for people working in various professions can be adapted to fit the different occupations present in your congregation. As a Christian liberal arts institution, Calvin University prepares students not only for their different fields of calling, but to live as agents of renewal and citizens of God’s kingdom in their everyday work and living.

Consider using these prayers over several weeks. They are meant to be prompts and are not all-inclusive. If there are professions in your congregation that are not named here, consider writing your own prayers, acknowledging that we are called to offer all parts of our lives to God.

Gracious God, you are love, and in you all things hold together.

We pray for our librarians, who serve their neighbors through the work of connection. Bless them as they connect people with needed information, resources, technologies, and services. Guide them as they help people not only locate information, but also evaluate it, organize it, and use it with confidence and discernment.

Lord of wisdom and knowledge, give our librarians understanding as they answer questions both simple and complex. Help them as they guide patrons through research. Equip them with prudence and judgment as they assist students, faculty, professionals, and community members.

Mighty and merciful God, our librarians teach people how to navigate an increasingly complex information landscape in a world crowded with misinformation and uncertainty. Please give them the patience to guide users without frustration and the humility to acknowledge the limits of their own knowledge.

God of history, you who shapes and knows the entire history of your creation, give wisdom to librarians as they build and preserve the collections, as they evaluate new books and materials and the existing collections. Grant them diligence and curiosity as they identify gaps and respond to ever-changing academic and community needs.

Lord of every people and community, we pray for librarians who seek to serve diverse communities and honor their dignity and gifts. Provide them with the virtues of service and hospitality as they create and maintain places of gathering, learning, resting, and growing. Give them wisdom and empathy as they plan programs for different audiences and respond to the educational, cultural, and practical needs of those they serve.

God of truth and freedom, strengthen our librarians to uphold integrity and intellectual freedom. Give them courage as they resist misinformation, protect privacy, and curate materials from diverse perspectives. Please grant them emotional resilience as they serve the frustrated, vulnerable, lonely, or distressed. Fill their hearts with compassion.

Master of the Sabbath, you know our need for rest. Protect our librarians from burnout. We pray for their well-being, joy, and sense of vocation. Give them rest. Renew them in body, mind, and spirit.

Lord of the universe, may all their work glorify your name and serve the good of their neighbors. May their work bear witness to your kingdom and reflect the good news of Jesus Christ. May their work serve the flourishing of your creation and anticipate the renewal of all things in Christ.

In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
