From Gracious Gift to Fearful Decision

A presentation on the trajectory of John Calvin's theology and practice of the Lord's Supper in Dutch Reformed churches

Date:

Monday, January 7, 2019 from 3:30PM to 4:30PM (EST)

Location:

Meeter Center Lecture Hall, Calvin College
Grand Rapids, Michigan

Hosted by H. Henry Meeter Center for Calvin Studies and presented by Leonard VanderZee, H. Henry Meeter Center recipient of the Emo Van Halsema Fellowship.

Calvin's Eucharistic theology, as opposed to Zwingli's, is characterized by a profound and joyful participation in Christ through the gift of his true glorified humanity in the bread and wine. This presentation will consider some factors by which a more Zwinglian focus on the communicant's faith and commitment came to predominate in the Dutch Reformed tradition, despite the clearly Calvinist statements of its confessions.
