To nurture community within the congregation and the neighborhood by promoting active participation in worship through the arts and the preached Word.

Provide a brief summary of the purpose and goal of your grant.

Because we see worship as a way of life and not merely a moment in time, our goal was to integrate the preached Word of God and creative arts to promote vitality, kinship and active participation in worship and the mission of the church.

What are two questions that have generated reflection on worship and helped shape your project?

The questions that have generated reflection and helped to shape our project are:

  1. Can worship influence spiritual formation and become a way of life?
  2. How can we define worship in a way that helps us to see and discern God in humanity

What impact has your project had on the worship life and habits of the congregation?

Worship life at New Hope has become more intentional, engaging and relevant!  This project has enlivened the spirit and given people the opportunity to build a tangible bridge of joy and intimacy with God through learning about the art of preaching, hearing powerful testimonies in song and monologues. Our new website, art in worship initiatives, faith based videos have helped the congregation further embrace its identity as a place where community is uplifted and people matter.

What have been your greatest challenges (or challenging opportunities)?

One of our greatest challenges was implementing project goals in the midst of a pandemic. We were also moving the church to a new location. However, we remain faithful because God has extended our reach in beyond a physical location and in spite of COVID 19. Through good and challenging times, we have nurtured a spirit of hope by helping people discern the love of Jesus and see that worship can be a way of life.

What would you like to share with other Project Directors?

Our advice:

  • Have a diverse and robust committee working together
  • Accept that some leaders will drop out
  • Be prepared to reassign duties
  • Keep the joy in the journey!

We are grateful that  Calvin Institute of Worship invested in us and blessed us to dream, believe and walk in the light of Christ. May the blessing of this opportunity build your church and community and provide a legacy of hope for years to come!  We look forward to sharing with you in June.
