Eric Mathis is associate pastor of The First Baptist Church of the City of Washington, DC, with responsibilities in administration, faith formation, music, worship, and young adult ministry. He believes corporate worship is a critical agent of spiritual formation, and he is deeply committed to connecting all ages to the power and possibilities inherent in worship and the arts.
Mathis holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in music and theology, including a doctorate in theology from Fuller Theological Seminary. With Lester Ruth of Duke Divinity School, he is coauthor of Leaning on the Word: Worship with Argentine Baptists in the Mid-Twentieth Century (Eerdmans, 2017). His most recent publication is Worship with Teenagers: Adolescent Spirituality and Congregational Practice (Baker Academic, 2022).
