Weekly worship prepares congregations for the work of the week ahead in many different jobs and places. We all carry different burdens throughout the week and are given different tasks. This series of prayers written by Calvin University faculty and staff for people working in various professions can be adapted to fit the different occupations present in your congregation. As a Christian liberal arts institution, Calvin University prepares students not only for their different fields of calling, but to live as agents of renewal and citizens of God’s kingdom in their everyday work and living.
Consider using these prayers over several weeks. They are meant to be prompts and are not all-inclusive. If there are professions in your congregation that are not named here, consider writing your own prayers, acknowledging that we are called to offer all parts of our lives to God.
Creator God,
We thank you for the people who tend the software and hardware and unseen technological systems woven through ordinary life. Bless those who build them and those who maintain them, the ones on call at three in the morning keeping the lights on while the rest of us sleep, the ones who create so many of our conveniences and even necessities.
We praise you for your creativity, of which a developer’s craft is one small, borrowed glimpse. Our most powerful programming languages are astonishing, and still they don’t
hold a candle to the “code” you have written into DNA, into the constants that hold the universe together, into laws we spend whole careers merely learning to read. The creativity you kindle in us is a true echo of your own, never rivaling your work, but sharing, in our small way, in the joy of making.
When the thorns of the fall push up through the keyboard, grant your people patience with the work that resists them, with the hours lost to a single stubborn mistake, with the days when nothing behaves as it should. Let that frustration be a small echo of a creation that groans for its redemption, and lift workers’ eyes toward the day you will make all things new.
Grant wisdom, too, for the thousand small decisions a programmer makes in a day—choices that seem so minor on the screen and yet quietly shape the lives of people they will never meet. Steady them under the weight of all that is entrusted to their care, including the private details of ordinary lives, held in places no one else will ever see. May the sum of those quiet decisions honor your image bearers, help human life to thrive, and serve the coming of your kingdom.
We praise you for the flourishing you bring through this work, for the ways that distance can be collapsed into instant connection, for the guarding of lives by the steady pulse of a pacemaker. And we praise you for the ways this work presses back against injustice, when something as small as a phone can carry the voice of the silenced out to be heard and your word to those long cut off from it, even past closed borders.
God, we thank you for entrusting your own creativity to creatures like us. Fill developers, database administrators, hardware designers, and all who labor beside them with your Spirit so that their work would bear fruit, that they would find gladness in it, and that in the end all of it would give glory to you.
