To train worshipers in improvisational theater techniques in order to create a variety of worship experiences that facilitate intergenerational participation in worship.

Provide a brief summary of the purpose and goal of your grant.

Because of our changing culture, we are always looking for new forms of worship that can engage the next generation of worshippers as well as those who are not yet part of any church.  Our project was to train a worship team in the use of improvisational theater techniques, and empower them to create and lead an ongoing series of innovative worship experiences based on those techniques.

What are two questions that have generated reflection on worship and helped shape your project?

  1. How can we become more of a participant instead of a spectator in worship, making it more of a communal experience?
  2. How can we create a greater awareness and anticipation of God’s presence in worship?

What impact has your project had on the worship life and habits of the congregation?

With the Covid pandemic restrictions, most of last year’s worship services were presented online.  Our team created a series of videos that enhanced worship and brought the message alive in a dramatic and visual way.  Because people have many different learning styles and life experiences, we found this format touched them deeply in a way our regular form of worship did not, expanding their experience with the uniqueness of improv and the variety of ways it could be used within a service.

What have been your greatest challenges (or challenging opportunities)?

When we received the grant, we had not anticipated a lockdown. Building a team requires group work, a trust level between team members, and playing off each other.  When we finally met together, we were masked and socially distanced, which was a challenge as well. We hadn’t expected to make videos, but rather participate in live worship.  However, the challenge gave us the opportunity to think outside the box, and dive into a new realm.  The team was thrilled with the final product.

What would you like to share with other Project Directors?

Sometimes, leaving behind your well executed plan and the known outcome opens you up to new avenues of possibility.  Be flexible.  When a challenge arises, it often is the Lord giving you a better idea.  Never underestimate your creativity and those of your team, trusting the Holy Spirit to show you new ways that are fresh and more life-giving.
