Drawing on scripture, poetry, and songs of protest, this event will give voice to the anguish and hope of people who refuse to accept a world built on violence and inequity. Through readings, choral music, and communal song, we will move from lament to courage, discovering in these psalms not a call for vengeance, but a call to conscience—a reminder that to seek God is to seek justice for all.
Blending the depth of ancient worship with the power of shared song, Singing for Our Lives invites people into a shared experience of protest and praise—one that confronts the realities of oppression while opening space for compassion, just relationships, and renewal. The program weaves together contemporary and classical poetry and prose from Anne Lamott, Richard Leach, Helen Knott, and Kathy Fish alongside modern prophetic voices such as Desmond Tutu, Walter Brueggemann, and Martin Buber. Placed in dialogue with psalm texts and protest songs from Holly Near and Emma's Revolution, their words will help audiences hear the ancient prayers anew. This gathering will draw on the book of Psalms to remind us of the many ways the arts can awaken empathy, amplify truth, and call communities toward God’s vision of peace.
