Event Details

The human experience is characterized by seasons of lament, seasons of joy, and everything in between. But scripture reminds us that God is with us in all circumstances and in every season.

The psalms are an especially good reminder. They express the full range of human emotions and experiences, and they guide communities in practicing praise and lament, asking questions, wondering, doubting, finding words of comfort, and so much more. Though written thousands of years ago, the psalms still resonate with diverse contemporary audiences.

This event will feature an interdisciplinary panel of scholars exploring the psalms, drawing on theology, psychology, and biology to better understand the roles of lament and praise in worship and in our humanity.

Featured panelists include Dr. John Witvliet, a theologian and scholar of the worship arts; Dr. Charlotte Witvliet, a clinical psychologist; and Dr. Ciara Reyes-Ton, a biologist and worship leader.

This event will also include communal psalm singing, a panel discussion, worship led by the Mount Carmell Worship Collective for Faith, Science, and the Arts, and featured artists Michelle Raybourn, Steven Schumann, and others.

This event is sponsored by the American Scientific Affiliation, the Mount Carmell Worship Collective, Lipscomb University’s McClure Faith and Science Center, and the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship.
