Church choirs typically consist of a diverse group of folks with varying degrees of singing ability and experience, and most are amateur singers. It’s the job of the director to form this group into a choir that is worthy of its place in the liturgy. This workshop will focus on the basic skills for achieving this goal. It is a workshop primarily for choir directors, with accompanists, section leaders, and parish music coordinators also welcome. Participants are expected to have basic music reading skills. The class will form a choir for the three nights of this presentation. Participants from all churches are heartily welcome.
Session I: How do we sing? Vocal basics for amateur singers, simple approaches
to achieving good blend, dealing with “problem” singers in a non-confrontational
manner, plus successful methods for recruiting.
Session II: What do we sing? A focus on choosing and rehearsing appropriate
repertoire that is well-suited to the resources of your particular group.
Session III: Why do we sing? The role of the choir in the worship. The choir as a source of inspiration and artistic beauty. Using the choir to stimulate and enhance congregational song without becoming a substitute for congregational singing.
