James Abbington on Psalms for All Seasons

James Abbington discusses the new hymnal Psalms for All Seasons.

James Abbington is associate professor of church music and worship at Candler School of Theology, Emory University in Atlanta, GA. He is also the executive editor of the African American Church Music Series published by GIA Publications, Inc. of Chicago, IL, and has served as co-director of the annual Hampton University Ministers’ and Musicians’ Conference since 2000. The Worship Institute also is pleased that he has been a longtime member of our Worship Renewal Grants advisory board and has been a regular presenter at Symposium.

Recently we were able to sit down with Dr. Abbington and engage him in a wide-ranging conversation on worship renewal, church music and much more. One of the topics of conversation was our Psalms for All Seasons: A Complete Psalter for Worship, which Abbington called not just a long overdue compilation, but a new way of thinking about old texts. He added: "This compilation brings a certain global freshness, a historical freshness, all under one cover." It is, he said, a complete Psalter, one that speaks to people wherever they are.
