Comunidad Emergente Aprende a Través de la Adoración Creativa
La Iglesia Comunidad Cristiana Nuevo Pacto CBF (Compañerismo Bautista Cooperativo), es una comunidad emergente que inició de sus actividades en abril del 2020, justo cuando el mundo entero detuvo sus actividades por la pandemia de COVID-19.
Pero eso no fue un obstáculo para que la Reverenda Xiomara Reboyras-Ortiz y su equipo empezaran de todos modos, pero en línea, hasta finales de ese mismo año, cuando iniciaron sus reuniones presenciales.
Pero, conozcamos un poco más a la Comunidad Cristiana Nuevo Pacto. ¿Quiénes son, cómo es su culto, cómo es que adoran y en qué se distinguen de otras congregaciones hispano/latinas? Además, qué es lo que hicieron cuando fueron desafiados por el Calvin Institute of Christian Worship y cuáles fueron los logros obtenidos.
¿Quién es la Comunidad Cristiana Nuevo Pacto y Cómo Adoran?
Esta joven comunidad, compuesta por personas diversas en cuanto a su nacionalidad, educación, y experiencia, ha puesto en práctica distintas formas de vivir su espiritualidad, desde la Oración Centrante, Lectio Divina, y hasta otras liturgias registradas en la historia de los creyentes de todos los tiempos. Lo que han hecho es dejar las costumbres que usualmente se practican actualmente en otras iglesias, para dar lugar a la creatividad.
La Comunidad Cristiana Nuevo Pacto no tiene un programa fijo a desarrollar cada vez que están juntos y juntas. Las personas que llegan a la reunión no saben qué es lo que va a pasar. No tienen un orden establecido que es dirigido por personas específicas, porque entienden que liturgia literalmente significa el trabajo de todos. “O todos lo hacemos o nadie lo hace,” dijo la Reverenda Xiomara.
Al preguntar acerca de qué más es lo que usan en el culto, comparte que en las reuniones tienen todo tipo de elementos, como la campana tibetana, y experimentan otras formas de adoración, como la Taizé, por ejemplo. “Mi marido es bautista, pero es casi católico y le encanta la liturgia. Él está entrenado en dirección espiritual. Por otro lado, mi liturgista era una persona con maestría en liturgia. Además, estamos conectados con gente con experiencia y con amplio conocimiento de historia y de teología que nos puede ayudar en el proceso. Entonces tenemos la posibilidad de consultar si vamos bien,” puntualizó la Reverenda Xiomara.
Un día la pastora llega a la reunión con un equipo de sonido para hacer karaoke, ante la sorpresa de los presentes. Y anuncia que la oración se hará por medio de la interpretación de canciones. “¿Vamos a cantar solo canciones cristianas?” preguntaron. La pastora respondió que no. Fue un bolero y dos alabanzas típicas las que se interpretaron. Luego, invitó a la congregación escuchar un podcast, que previamente había inspirado a la pastora y que ahora lo compartía con su congregación, para invitar a descubrir los valores que había en algo no cristiano, en algo atípico, pero que enriquece a esta congregación.
Esta nueva comunidad de adoración que es inclusiva, donde todos y todas son bienvenidas, considera que la evidencia de que Dios está presente en las personas es el cambio natural y orgánico en la vida de cada una de ellas. “Si eso se da sin que tengamos que empujar mucho, creo que ya Dios lo hizo,” añadió la Reverenda Xiomara.
Lo que cultivan son relaciones sanas, honestas, y abiertas en el Espíritu Santo. Esta sensibilidad para ser guiados por Dios se deja ver, por ejemplo, cuando específicamente uno de los miembros adultos de este grupo habla, lo hace con sencillez, con humildad, como un niño. “Entonces la presencia de Dios se hace real y todos somos tocados, aunque podamos estar ahí personas con mucha preparación académica y experiencia en liderazgo. Todos y todas hacemos silencio, las lágrimas caen y al terminar salimos del servicio preguntándonos ‘¿qué fue eso? Yo no entiendo esto.’ Y esa es la frase más común que escuchamos”, puntualizó la Reverenda Xiomara.
Proyecto “La Sala de Todos”
La Iglesia Comunidad Cristiana Nuevo Pacto fue una de las congregaciones beneficiadas con el Programa de Becas Adoración Vital, Predicación Vital, que ofreció recientemente el Calvin Institute of Christian Worship (CICW), el mismo que dio la oportunidad para que pusieran en marcha el proyecto “La Sala de Todos.” El objetivo fue crear espacios y experiencias para unificar a la congregación y miembros de la comunidad, a fin de experimentar la adoración y la espiritualidad, desde la cotidianidad, como una expresión de vida y comunión con lo ivino.
Tal como lo testifican los y las líderes, esto ha motivado a la congregación a la necesidad de tener espacios y prácticas de adoración y vida espiritual que promuevan relaciones interpersonales transparentes, que son las que comunican verdaderamente a Dios. Además, continúan aprendiendo a contextualizar la adoración y la vida espiritual, para compartir de modos no tradicionales, pero si intencionales, aunque eso implique romper los modelos preconcebidos y normalizados de la iglesia.
Fueron varias las actividades que se organizaron desde principios de año, para cumplir con los objetivos que se había trazado la Comunidad Cristiana Nuevo Pacto. La primera fue un taller de Escritura Creativa llamado “Tu Historia También Puede Ser Contada,” que estuvo a cargo de Joily Gómez, quien tiene un master en escritura creativa y pedagogía y es autora del libro Surcos. Magistralmente, ella inspiró a personas creyentes y no creyentes, a reflexionar y plasmar por medio de la escritura, el valor teológico y litúrgico de sus propias experiencias en su caminar de fe.
La segunda actividad fue de comedia, denominado “Riendo en la Sala Con Todos,” a cargo de Amaury Oyola, Gerente de Felicidad y Bienestar Laboral. Es actor, comediante, libretista, coach de bienestar y un especialista en comedia dirigida al bienestar humano y social con contenido bíblico/teológico. Amaury trabaja con el gobierno de Puerto Rico en los lugares más desprovistos de recursos sociales y emocionales, compartiendo el tema ‘¿Cómo yo me levanto de donde estoy?’ Y todo esto a través de la comedia y de la risa. En este evento, se logró compartir con miembros de la comunidad y otros grupos de fe, una experiencia de adoración y reflexión viendo a la risa como recurso.
También se llevó a cabo el evento “La Familia en la Sala Reunida,” donde se destacó el tema de la familia como el primer espacio al que se debe dedicar tiempo y atención. Además, se invitó a abordar la idea de evaluar la salud espiritual, la devoción y la adoración, utilizando como medida la salud de nuestras relaciones familiares.
“Contando y Cantando” fue llamada la experiencia de adoración, a cargo de Coco Freeman, destacado intérprete cubano. En este evento, se hicieron presente varias decenas de personas, entre pastores y miembros de nueve diferentes iglesias que representaban a varias denominaciones, incluyendo la católica. Esta actividad sirvió para disfrutar himnos evangélicos tradicionales y analizar el contenido teológico y bíblico de los mismos. Además, la carencia de significado y contenido escritural de algunos temas, que están centrados en las emociones y en el “yo.”
Metas Alcanzadas
La Reverenda Xiomara reportó que entre las metas alcanzadas, se destaca el “proveer un espacio seguro, neutral y no religioso, donde tanto la comunidad como la iglesia pueden compartir temas y experiencias cotidianas, que evidencien la creencia de la adoración como una expresión de vida de quienes aman a Dios y se conducen por su comunión con lo divino.” Además, se capacitó y animó a los hermanos y hermanas de la iglesia, a compartir sus historias personales sobre su experiencia de fe y de adoración desde un modelo de Iglesia alternativo.

“Agradezco al Calvin y a todo el personal que dispuso tiempo, energía y recursos para ayudarnos a soñar. Gracias por confiar en nosotros y sobre todas las cosas, por dejarse usar por Dios. Oramos por ustedes y le pedimos al Señor que todo lo que hagan – sobre todas las cosas – de un fruto maravilloso y eterno,” añadió la Reverenda Xiomara.
EMERGENT COMMUNITY LEARNS THROUGH CREATIVE WORSHIP
Comunidad Cristiana Nuevo Pacto CBF (New Covenant Christian Community) is a self-proclaimed emergent church that first formed in April 2020, around the time the world first halted public activities because of the COVID-19 pandemic. But that wasn’t an obstacle for Reverend Xiomara Reboyras-Ortiz and her team. They launched the church anyway, online. They would begin hosting physical gatherings by the end of 2020.
Let us learn more about Comunidad Cristiana Nuevo Pacto. Who are they? What are their services like? How do they worship and what distinguishes them from other Hispanic/Latino congregations? Further, how did they respond when Calvin Institute of Christian Worship challenged them and what goals were accomplished?
Who They Are and How They Worship
This young community, composed of people of diverse nationalities, educational backgrounds, and life experiences, have put into practice various distinct ways of living out their spirituality, from Centering Prayer, Lectio Divina, and other liturgies from across the history of Christianity. They have departed from the expected and typical models for spiritual expression and made room for creativity.
Comunidad Cristiana Nuevo Pacto doesn’t have an established program to follow when they gather. People who arrive at gatherings are mostly unaware of what will take place. There is no established order directed towards specific people because they understand liturgy to be about everyone’s work together. “We all do it or no one does it,” stated Reverend Xiomara.
When asked about what activity is mostly employed during gatherings, she shares that their community members might use different kinds of elements, such as mindfulness bells. Sometimes, they also experiment with alternative forms of worship as well, such as Taizé. “My husband is Baptist, but he is also basically a Catholic and loves our liturgy. He is trained in spiritual formation,” Reverend Xiomara said. “On the other hand, my actual liturgist is someone with a master’s degree in liturgical practices. We are connected with people who have much experience and ample knowledge about history and theology, all of whom support us in the process. So we can always consult with them to see if we’re doing well.”
One day, the pastor arrived at the gathering with a sound system to perform karaoke, to the surprise of all who were present. She also announced that prayer would be done that day through singing along. “Are we going to only sing Christian music?” some asked. Reverend Xiomara responded with a no. A vintage romance song and two worship songs were selected for vocal interpretation. Afterwards, she invited the congregation to listen to a podcast episode that had previously inspired her. She shared it with the congregation to invite the discovery of values that existed in non-Christian things, something atypical, but that could enrich the congregation.
This new worship community, which is inclusive, where everyone is welcome, considers that the best evidence that God is present in people is through the natural and organic change witnessed in their everyday lives. “If that works itself out without us having to push much, I know God has already done it,” added Reverend Xiomara.
What is cultivated here are healthy relationships, honest and open, in the Holy Spirit. The sensibility to be guided by God is made known through example. For example, the pastor described one adult member of the church speaks with such humility, almost as a child. “That’s when God’s presence is made real and we are all touched by this, even if we are people with much education and leadership experience. Everyone becomes silent, tears flow, and at the end of the service, we end up asking each other, ‘What was that? I don’t understand this.’ That is the most common phrase we hear,” Reverend Xiomara shared.
“La Sala de Todos” (Everyone’s Living Room) Project
Comunidad Cristiana Nuevo Pacto was one of the congregations that benefited from the Vital Worship, Vital Preaching Grant Program, which was recently offered by the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship (CICW). This is the same organization that helped launch “La Sala de Todos” (Everyone’s Living Room) project. The objective was to create spaces and experiences to unify the congregation with community members through experimentation in worship and spiritual practice. These could even include the most quotidian of exercises, all as an expression of life and communion with the divine.
Leaders testify that this project has motivated the congregation to develop spaces and worship practices that promote transparent relationship building, which is how God truly communicates with us. They continue to learn to contextualize worship and spiritual life, to share intentional, non-traditional methods, even if this means breaking the mold of preconceived formats normalized even by their own church.
Many activities were organized from the beginning of the year to accomplish the objectives traced by Comunidad Cristiana Nuevo Pacto. The first was a Creative Scripture Workshop called “Your Story Too Can Be Told,” which was led by Joily Gómez––who has a master’s degree in creative writing and pedagogy and is author of the book Surcos. She inspired believers and non-believers to reflect on the theological and liturgical value of their own experiences with faith by using scripture.
The second activity was comedy, called “Riendo en la Sala Con Todos” (Laughing in the Living Room with Everyone). It was led by Amaury Oyola, who is an actor, comedian, playwright, and wellness coach. He specializes in using comedy as a means for promoting wellness through biblical/theological content. Amaury works with the Puerto Rican government in some of the most neglected areas, sharing about “How do I lift myself up from where I am?” And he does all of this through comedy and laughter. In this event, the church was able to share with community members and other faith groups. It was an experience of worship and reflection that used laughter as a resource.
Another event was “La Familia en la Sala Reunida,” (The Family Togther in the Living Room) where the family unit was discussed as a prioritized space where we must dedicate our time and attention. Conversations included the idea of spiritual health evaluation – devotion and worship – and using the health within families as a barometer for how well people are doing.
“Contando y Cantando” (Counting and Singing) was a worship experience led by Coco Freeman, a renowned Cuban singer. During this event, dozens of people attended: pastors and members of other churches, including Catholic parishioners. This activity was a time to enjoy the traditional evangelical hymnal and to analyze its biblical/theological content. The lack of biblical content in some of the traditional songs was also brought up, seemingly rooted in a strong sense of egotism.
Achieved Goals
Reverend Xiomara reports that among achieved goals, what stood out was the need to “provide safe, neutral, and non-religious spaces where the community and the church can together share quotidian themes and experiences that evidence the belief in worship as an expression of life from those who love God and move towards their communion with the divine.” The project also trained and motivated brethren within the church to share their personal faith and worship stories, all within an alternative ecclesiastic model.

Reverend Xiomara stated, “I’d like to thank Calvin, to all the personnel that gave of their time, energy, and resources to help us dream. Thank you for trusting in us and, above all things, for allowing yourselves to be used by God. We pray for you and ask the Lord that all you do will bring about wonderful and eternal fruits of the Spirit.”
