Daniel Block

Daniel Block is the Gunther H. Knoedler Professor Emeritus of Old Testament in the Wheaton College Graduate School, where he developed the Old Testament segment of the doctoral program. He previously taught at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Bethel Theological Seminary, and Providence College and Seminary.

Dr. Block's educational and research background includes post-doctoral studies at Cambridge University; a doctorate in Semitics and Classical Hebrew, University of Liverpool; a master of arts in Biblical studies–Old Testament from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School; bachelor’s degrees in history and education from the University of Saskatchewan; special studies in History of Thought and Culture at Friedrich Alexander University; and a diploma in Biblical studies from Bethany Bible College.

A frequent international lecturer and a prolific author, Block’s most recent major publication is Covenant: The Framework of God’s Grand Plan of Redemption (Baker, 2021). His current project, a three-volume commentary on Deuteronomy especially for Christians in Asia, is about to be released. He also serves as senior editor for the new Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the Old Testament. He is an active member of the Evangelical Theological Society, the Society of Biblical Literature, and the Institute of Biblical Research, which he served as president from 2001–06.

Block and his wife, Ellen, are active members of College Church in Wheaton, where Dr. Block preaches occasionally. They have two adult children and six delightful grandchildren.
