Session | October 17, 2023 Receptive Ecumenism in Neighborhoods, Soccer Fields, and Workplaces This session will explore how to talk about differences in Catholic and Protestant worship. Every time we talk with a neighbor, teammate, or coworker from a different Christian tradition about what we do in worship and why, we are practicing liturgical theology. When marked by both conviction and humility, these conversations have rich potential for building holy friendships and deepening our worship of God. Yet they can also backfire, perpetuating stereotypes and leaving us unsure about the point of common practices. Come to this session to learn from veteran participants in both formal ecumenical dialogues and informal neighborhood conversations about how we can engage with believers across the Protestant-Catholic divide in constructive and healing ways. Session | October 17, 2023 How Artificial Intelligence Could Reshape the Church From early technologies such as the first-century codex and the fifteenth-century printing press to modern projectors, smartphones, and virtual reality, technology has changed the church and worship in profound ways. Remembering that we shape our tools, but thereafter our tools shape us, how might artificial intelligence (AI) affect worship and the church in the twenty-first century? This presentation will explore some of the ways that AI might shape the church and suggests some guidelines to discern appropriate use of technology to "test everything" and "hold fast to what is good." Session | October 17, 2023 Thinking about Catholic Diversity as a Migrant Church (Salsa Style!) How does one think about diversity as a Christian or as the church? How might working with and among—or even just thinking about—migrant neighbors contribute to our ecclesial identity? The language of catholicity allows us to imagine the unity of the church not in a monocultural way, but rather as a community inclusive of people of all languages and ethnicities. Migration and migrants today especially remind the church of its own catholic identity. How does the church's identity as a migrant church foster a healthy catholicity in the church's worship? This session will include the use of salsa music to invite participation in a more catholic way of life, asking what multicultural, crosscultural, and intercultural ways of being a church on the move might look like in worship. Session | October 17, 2023 Promoting a Culture of Goodness through Worship It seems not a week goes by when a church isn’t in the news for issues of sexual, emotional, or spiritual abuse. How can the church do better in fostering a culture of goodness that resists abuse, and what role can worship play in nurturing safer and more hospitable church communities? This workshop will explore worship practices and postures that cultivate in worshipers not only a deeper love for God, but deeper love and empathy for others. Attendees will leave with concrete ideas and considerations for song choices, prayers, in-between words, and other elements of worship. Online Discussion | October 17, 2023 Worship with Teenagers: History Lessons for Ministry Today Teenagers’ desire to encounter God has been realized throughout history as youth ministry has grown and evolved. Indeed, teenagers have expressed needs and desires to practice and grow their faith at church, school, and home as well as at camps and conferences or on short- and long-term mission trips. On the one hand, these worship efforts have been deeply formative. On the other hand, these worship efforts have focused on attracting and keeping teenagers as much as, if not more than, on spiritual formation. This session will identify key historical patterns in adolescent worship and examine how we might engage their wisdom for faithful worship practices with teenagers today. Session | October 17, 2023 Responding to Tragedy and Loss in Preaching and Worship All pastors and congregations deal with tragedy and loss. Are there ways we can prepare ahead of time to minimize risk and pain? How can we respond after a tragedy in ways that aid healing and wholeness? This session will address how pastors and church leaders can respond in sermons and worship services to suicide, local crises in the church or city, and/or nationwide tragedy. Resources for planning worship and preparing sermons will be highlighted. Session | October 17, 2023 Music and Prayer in Worship Music and prayer are prominent elements in worship liturgy. How does the culture of the worship community influence these worship practices? How should we engage culture and yet be countercultural in our practice of music and prayer? Engage with this panel from four continents as we explore how cultural values form and inform worship practices. Worship Service | October 17, 2023 “Come, Spirit of Christ!”: The Holy Spirit in Planning Worship for Holy Week Holy Week is an invitation to share in the passion of Christ. But how do we share in Christ's passion today, and how do we enact that liturgically during Holy Week? This workshop uses insights from the field of Spirit Christology, which looks at the Holy Spirit's role in Jesus' life, to discern and pray for the movement of the Spirit of Christ in our lives. Based on his book Sculptor Spirit, the presenter proposes five ways in which the Spirit shapes Christ in and through us as we share in his life during Holy Week. We will reflect on how worship can invite participants into the Spirit's work of forming us into repentant, resilient, sacrificial, hospitable, and devoted people.
