Even impressionistic ideas about what happened in the Reformation or in various missionary movements influence our ideas about how culture and worship intersect. Session | October 17, 2023 Worship with Teenagers: History Lessons for Ministry Today Teenagers’ desire to encounter God has been realized throughout history as youth ministry has grown and evolved. Indeed, teenagers have expressed needs and desires to practice and grow their faith at church, school, and home as well as at camps and conferences or on short- and long-term mission trips. On the one hand, these worship efforts have been deeply formative. On the other hand, these worship efforts have focused on attracting and keeping teenagers as much as, if not more than, on spiritual formation. This session will identify key historical patterns in adolescent worship and examine how we might engage their wisdom for faithful worship practices with teenagers today. Session | October 17, 2023 Thinking Deeply and Broadly about Worship Planning A moderated conversation on Zoom for the Worship Planning cohort with panelists Constance Cherry, Ruth Ann Schuringa, Chris Walker, hosted by Joyce Borger. Session | October 17, 2023 Receptive Ecumenism in Neighborhoods, Soccer Fields, and Workplaces This session will explore how to talk about differences in Catholic and Protestant worship. Every time we talk with a neighbor, teammate, or coworker from a different Christian tradition about what we do in worship and why, we are practicing liturgical theology. When marked by both conviction and humility, these conversations have rich potential for building holy friendships and deepening our worship of God. Yet they can also backfire, perpetuating stereotypes and leaving us unsure about the point of common practices. Come to this session to learn from veteran participants in both formal ecumenical dialogues and informal neighborhood conversations about how we can engage with believers across the Protestant-Catholic divide in constructive and healing ways. Their congregations were part of the first cohort of Hispanic congregations receiving "worship grants" under a new initiative CICW launched in July of 2022. Session | October 17, 2023 "Do This in Remembrance of Me": Cultural Reflections on the Lord's Table The Lord’s Supper is one of the universal worship practices of the Christian faith. Yet the cultural heritage of the congregation and the wider community could influence what’s emphasized in this worship practice—giving thanks, remembering Christ’s suffering, hoping for Jesus’ second coming, or sharing, among others. Join this conversation with panelists from four continents on the contextual and crosscultural aspects of this transcultural worship practice.
