LUYH Hymnal Used by Class in Kenya
Church leaders enrolled in a worship class at Bishop Birech College, Kitale, Kenya, open new copies of the hymnal “Lift Up Your Hearts: Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs.”
Students from a wide variety settings, including many non-urban environments, participated in the course. Music professor John Pfautz of Augustana College (Illinois) was a guest instructor at the college this past August. He learned many of their songs and was able to teach some hymns in Swahili which are found in the new hymnal. The hymnals will stay at the college and hopefully continue to be used by many. The course created wonderful opportunities for exploring the complementary strengths of learning songs through both aural tradition and written notation, and the value of sharing songs across cultures. We look forward to continuing learning opportunities together--from the global south and the global north, from aural and written sources--as we grow together as brothers and sisters in Christ.
